Battlefords area history buffs will kick off their 2020 with a look back at the 1920s at the Discovery Mall’s latest event from Feb. 6 to 8.

The City of North Battleford Historic Archives Volunteer Committee is presenting a look back at the 20s in 2020.

Bill Wells, the chairman of the committee, said there will be a variety of themed displays at the event.

“There are sports themes, construction themes, entertainment themes, and lifestyle themes so people should be able to find something in each one of those that should interest them,” he said.

Wells said they also have plenty of maps and pictures to provide historical context. He said events like this are a great opportunity to celebrate our past before it’s lost to history.

“Some of the material that we have, some of it is deteriorating rapidly. We try to make sure we keep it the best we can but it isn’t really meant to be kept or hidden away. This is our way of putting it out where people can see this stuff,” he said.

Like their title would suggest, the City of North Battleford Historic Archives Volunteer committee is run entirely by volunteers and funded by the city. Wells said this event is a passion project for him and his team of volunteers who are very interested in both researching and sharing the area’s history.

Wells said he hopes many leave the event with an appreciation for what was here before and the legacy built.

“We are dealing with the 1920s — it was a time of growth in the Battlefords with a lot of things happening. Lots of construction was going on at that time,” he said.

The displays will be set up from noon until 5 p.m. on each day of the event.

“We hope people understand that people were here before who worked hard and had a vision for this city, and for the most part they made it come true,” he said.
