It was the Battlefords moment to shine last night at the 2020 Best of the Best (BOB) Awards.

BOB winners came together to be honoured at a special ceremony at the Gold Eagle Casino.

Kelly Bitner of battlefordsNOW said there is a lot of support for these awards in which the community picks the winners.

“I think it was a great event,” he said. “It’s great to see this many people coming out to celebrate local business and local people that are doing great things. It’s huge how many people are voting for these awards.”

Some of the award winners included Gene Aulinger who was named the Best Citizen, Darcy Woolfitt the Best Hero and Best Police Officer, and Battlefords Boys and Girls Club won the Best Non-Profit.

Jeff Gibson received the award for the Best Secondary School Teacher.

“The reason I got into the profession was because I love working with kids, trying to build confidence,” he said.

Gibson said he appreciates being recognized.

The Cooke Family picked up the award for the Best Newspaper Carrier.

Aliya Cooke, 18, said she and her 10 brothers and sisters all deliver papers together.

“It worked faster for our family to all do it together,” she said, adding the family also enjoys volunteering in the community whenever it has a chance.

Nearly 5,000 registered voters participated in the 2020 BOB awards, up by about five per cent from last year. Over 160,000 votes were cast.
