SJHL/MJHL Showcase concludes in Regina

The SJHL/MJHL joint-league showcase drew to a close Wednesday night, concluding the third year of the annual event.

The Manitoba Junior League (MJHL) won two of the three games to close out the showcase on Day 2.

The SJHL’s Team Kunitz fell 4-3 to Team Zajac of the MJHL to open the day’s schedule.

Stars’ forwards, Elijah Loon-Stewardson and Austin Becker scored for Team Kunitz in the effort, along with Melfort’s Tian Rask, while Melfort goalie, Shawn Parkinson made 25 saves in the loss.

At the other end, Waywayseecapo’s Jack Kennedy and Conrad Phillips, and Dauphin’s Brayden Pawluck and Grady Hobbs cashed in for Team Zajac, to go along with a 28-save effort from Swan Valley’s Mikael Foucher in the win.

Sticking with a 4-3 theme, MJHL’s Team Belfour then topped the SJHL’s Team Mitchell in the follow-up, mid-afternoon game.

Nipawin’s Jake Tremblay scored two goals in the outing, while Jordan Simoneau pitched in a single tally as well to make it 3-0 SJHL, before Manitoba came storming back.

Selkirk’s Blake Burr, Winkler’s Griffin Leonard, Portage’s Namaka Brett and Dauphin’s Dekonick Cole potted four unanswered to take the final, 4-3.

Nipawin’s Ross Hawrlyk stopped all 21 shots sent his way through the first half of the outing, while Estevan’s Keenan Rancier went 15-for-19 in the back-half. Nathan Moore, of the Portage Terriers, stopped 24-of-27 for the win.

In the final game of the night, the SJHL’s Team Schwartz topped the MJHL’s Team Garbutt 7-6 in a thriller to the final horn.

Stars’ forward, Steven Kesslering scored in the win, giving the 17-year-old his first goal of the tournament, while Evan Bortis, Zach McIntyre, Tristan Lemyre, Ben Tkachuk and Tristan Shewchuk also cashed in for the Saskatchewan side. Goalie, Joseph Young stopped 28 shots for the win.

Manitoba countered with goal contributions from Ty Naaykens, Kolton Shindle, Kyle Lamoureux, Brayden Foreman, Mikol Sartor and Jayden McCarthy. Goaltender, Dylan Meilun made 22 saves on 29 shots in the defeat
