Stars sniff out 5-1 win over Hounds

Jan 15, 2020 | 12:07 AM

The Battlefords North Stars topped the Notre Dame Hounds 5-1 Tuesday night in Wilcox.

Goaltender Austin Schwab led the way for the team, stopping 30 of 31 Hounds’ shots for the win, while five Stars’ players chipped in with a goal apiece.

After Notre Dame’s Brady Clayton opened the scoring in the first, Matthias Urbanski knotted things up, 1-1 early in the second.

Coming at the 6:25 mark of the middle frame, the goal came on the power play, serving as Urbanski’s 16th of the year.

Then, with just 13 seconds to go before the second intermission, Dylan Esau cashed in on his own rebound to make it 2-1 Stars on his 6th of the year.

Esau’s goal gave the Stars their first lead of the game, heading into the third period.

Then in the third, the Battlefords came through again, scoring three unanswered to run up the score.

Matthew Fletcher got the party started at 3-1, just over seven minutes into the final period. The captain wired home his 8th of the season, off the post and in from the high slot, with the puck all but denting the iron on its way into the goal.

Seth Summers then followed up his partner’s tally with a goal of his own on the power play. Wristing one through traffic from the blue line for the strike, the goal served as Summers’ 9th of the season and the Stars’ second man-advantage goal of the evening.

At 4-1, Notre Dame pulled their goalie late, hoping for a strong finish. The North Stars made them pay, however, as Austin Becker threaded a pass cross-ice to Elijah Loon-Stewardson late to seal the night’s action at 5-1 Stars. The goal was Loon-Stewardson’s 14th of the season.

With the victory, the Stars have now won six of their last seven games, and improve to 33-7-2 overall this season.

At the other end, Notre Dame fall to 15-22-4 on the year and now sit six points back of Estevan for the eighth and final playoff spot, with two more games played.

The Stars will look to carry their momentum into Wednesday night, as the team will travel to Melville hoping to keep things rolling against the Melville Millionaires. Wednesday’s game will be broadcast on NAPA Auto Parts North Stars Hockey on 1050 CJNB. The Ultra Print Pregame Show will begin at 7:15 p.m. with puck drop at 7:30 p.m.
