It was a big year for local sports in 2019, with a number of championships won, and memorable moments made. Here is Part 2 of a battlefordsNOW series highlighting some of the top stories from the past year in the local sporting world.

Battlefords Trappers playing in first NSRBL playoffs

The third time is the charm.

2019 marked a benchmark year for the Battlefords Trappers, as the team punched their ticket to the North Saskatchewan River Baseball League (NSRBL) playoffs for the first time in franchise history.

In just their third year in the league, the Trappers earned their postseason berth thanks to an impressive regular season showing. The team finished the campaign with a positive 8-5 record, while also ranking second in the league in batting.

Member of the Trappers, Gavin Nolin, said making the playoffs this year was a great reward for all the hard work that went into building the club up over the last three years.

Local basketball player commits to Thompson Rivers

For local basketball player, Jordin Wilkinson, 2019 brought with it an opportunity to further her basketball career.

Earlier in the year, Wilkinson committed to the Thompson Rivers University Wolfpack for the fall semester, as the former North Battleford Comprehensive High School grad, took the next step in pursuing the game she loves.

The opportunity came after countless hours spent on the hardwood, honing her skills and practicing her jump shot from a young age.

While she is now in her early 20’s, Wilkinson’s journey to where she is today began back when she attended her first basketball camp when she was just five-years-old. Taking to the sport right away, before long, she was helping lead the local high school team to a silver medal in HOOPLA and suiting up for Quest University. Her story shows that dedication yields results.

NBCHS senior girls claim first provincial medal in 23 years

For the North Battleford Comprehensive High School (NBCHS) senior girls volleyball team, the club’s third place finish at provincials this year marked a little slice of recent history.

The bronze medal serves as the senior girls’ first podium finish at provincials in over 20 years, an accomplishment not lost on their coach.

“I am really proud of them,” Head Coach Jana Friedenstab said. “They did really well and everyone was congratulating the girls when they returned [to the school] too.”

The Vikings’ girls started provincials a bit slow, but hit their stride tenfold in the playoff rounds.

Following a dominating effort against Swift Current in the quarter-finals, the girls then pushed Regina’s Campbell Collegiate to three sets, falling just short in the semis.

Following the narrow defeat, the team again rebounded to defeat P.A. Carlton in straight sets to claim the bronze.

JPII senior boys take home provincial silver on home court

The Crusaders’ senior boys volleyball team, clinched a provincial silver medal in front of their hometown crowd at the local high school in late November.

After winning all four games of round robin play on their way to the playoff rounds, the Crusaders’ boys continued their dominance with back-to-back victories over Saskatoon’s E.D. Feehan in the quarter-finals and Sturgis in the semifinals.

The victories paved the way to the gold medal game against Moose Jaw Vanier for the provincial championship.

While the team ended the effort with a silver medal performance, assistant coach of the team, Shelly Fransoo said she was pleased with the effort of the group throughout the weekend, saying she “could not be more proud of the team.”
