It was an evening of two important appointments at North Battleford council Monday.

City Manager Randy Patrick announced Acting Fire Chief Lindsay Holm was hired as North Battleford Fire Department’s new Chief, and Alain Manibal would serve as the city’s new Community Safety Officer unit commander.

Holm recently was honoured with the Saskatchewan Protective Services Medal for his exemplary, long dedication in his field.

Formerly deputy fire chief, Holm stepped into the position of acting fire chief following the departure of former chief Trevor Brice in Sept. 2019.

“[Holm] has been an incredible public servant and dedicated to the safety of the citizens of North Battleford. Now he will be doing that in a new capacity as our new fire chief,” Mayor Ryan Bater said following the meeting.

Holm has been with the North Battleford fire department for almost 20 years.

“I’m really looking forward to serving the city,” he said.

“It’s something I didn’t expect to come this soon,” Holm said of the appointment, while adding he is excited about the challenge ahead.

Alain Manibal who is taking over the Community Safety Officer unit commander position with the city is also primed for his new role.

“I look forward to the challenges, and I look forward to serving in this capacity,” he said. “I think the [CSO] program has great merit, and we can go a long way doing something very good with this.”

Manibal, who is a trained RCMP officer, worked with the local RCMP detachment before moving into the new position.

Previously, he served with the Town of Battleford as its public safety officer.

Mayor Bater said he was pleased to have Manibal as a new leader on the city’s team.

City Manager Randy Patrick echoed Bater’s sentiments, saying Manibal was an ideal choice for the position.

“This was a really good hire from our perspective,” Patrick said. “He was actually doing the downtown work with the RCMP. We got an absolutely top-notch unit commander there, and I’m looking forward to seeing what he can do.”

The city’s former CSO unit commander, Ross MacAngus, has recently taken on the vacant position of public safety officer with the Town of Battleford.
