North Stars drop second straight, fall 3-2 to Bruins in Estevan

Dec 4, 2019 | 11:02 PM

For the second straight night, the Battlefords North Stars found themselves on the wrong end of a 3-2 final,, as the team fell just short of a comeback effort Wednesday, against the Estevan Bruins at Affinity Place in Estevan.

The loss served as the team’s fifth defeat of the season and first time dropping consecutive contests this year.

Bruins’ forwards, Tanner Manz, Jayden Davis and Griffin Asham-Moroz led the way for Estevan with a goal each in the win. Goaltender Keenan Rancier stopped 27 of 29 shots against for the victory.

For the Battlefords, forwards, Elijah Loon-Stewardson and Matthias Urbanski provided the team’s two goals on the night in the loss.

Goaltender, Austin Schwab was pulled after allowing three goals on six shots in the first period, although the move appeared to be just as much about trying to spark the team as anything. In relief, Adam Dmyterko stopped all 23 shots he faced, to keep the Stars in the game right to the final horn.

Tanner Manz opened the scoring early, potting his ninth of the season on a tip-play in front to make it 1-0 Estevan just 11 seconds into the contest.

Although Elijah Loon-Stewardson would tie things up just seven minutes later on a sweet breakaway move to pull his team even at 1-1, that is as close as the Battlefords would get on the night.

Back to back goals by Bruins’ captain, Jayden Davis and Griffin Asham-Moroz made it 3-1 Estevan to end the first.

After a scoreless second period, the Stars did break through late in an otherwise largely scoreless third, on the power play, thanks to Matthias Urbanski.

Urbanski’s 13th of the season came off a converted rebound in front, and settled the scoring on the night; 3-2 Estevan the final.

The North Stars will now get a day off Thursday to rest and regroup, before returning to action Friday against Kindersley for the front-half of a home-and-home this weekend with the Klippers.

Friday’s game at the Civic Centre will be broadcast on 1050 CJNB. The Ultra Print Pregame Show will begin at 7:15 p.m. with puck drop at 7:30 p.m. on NAPA Auto Parts North Stars Hockey.
