Stars fall 3-2 to Hounds in overtime bout

The Battlefords North Stars fell 3-2 in overtime to the Notre Dame Hounds Tuesday night in Wilcox.

Hounds’ rookie, Guillaume St-Onge scored the overtime winner just 47 seconds into the extra frame to win the game for the home-side, while goaltender, Riley Kohonick stopped 36 of 38 shots against for Notre Dame in the victory.

Quintin Loon-Stewardson and Noah Form each potted a goal apiece for the Battlefords in the loss, while goalie, Adam Dmyterko made 17 saves on 20 shots.

The loss marked just the fourth defeat of the season for the North Stars, who remain well atop the league standings at 26-3-1 on the year.

With the win, the Hounds become only the second club to beat the Battlefords, joining their canine relatives, the Yorkton Terriers (who have done so three times) in the league’s most exclusive club this season.

More than just a moral victory however, with the win, Notre Dame move just a single point back of Kindersley for the eighth and final playoff spot in the league. Now 12-16-3 on the year, the Hounds have 27 points on the season, to Kindersley’s 28.

The North Stars opened the scoring Tuesday, thanks to an ice-breaking goal from forward, Quintin Loon-Stewardson.

Loon-Stewardson’s team-leading 21^st of the year came as a power play tally the 19-year-old snapped off the crossbar and in to make it 1-0 Stars just under nine minutes into the first.

Loon-Stewardson’s goal was the lone marker of the opening period. By the end of the first, it remained a 1-0 Stars’ lead.

It did not take long for the Hounds to pull even though, come the second.

Just 3:23 into the middle period, Hounds’ leading scorer, Jarrett Penner drove the front of the goal for his 13^th of the year, making it 1-1 on a bullish effort.

Before the end of the second, Stars’ blue liner, Noah Form scored a goal of his own following up the puck to the high-slot to re-up his team’s one-goal lead at 2-1 Stars.

Although the Battlefords took their lead to the dressing room, much like the period prior, it did not take long for the Hounds to sniff out an equalizer early in the new frame.

Just 3:40 into the third, Cole Stevenson notched his fifth of the year on a quick release in front to tie things up, 2-2.

The contest would remain knotted up to the final regulation horn, meaning the game was destined for overtime.

In the extra frame, St-Onge’s goal came off a transitional rush in three-on-three.

Picking up the puck at center, the 18-year-old Quebec, product skated right into the mid slot, before wristing a quick shot far-side past the Stars’ goalie and in for the game-winner; 3-2 Hounds the final.

The North Stars will now look to bounce-back quickly, as the team will return to action Wednesday night in Estevan to take on the Bruins. Wednesday’s game will be broadcast on 1050 CJNB. The Ultra Print Pregame Show will begin at 6:45 p.m. with puck drop at 7 p.m. on NAPA Auto Parts North Stars Hockey.
