Sweetgrass First Nation chooses new chief

Sweetgrass First Nation has a new Chief.

After finishing with 284 votes, Lori Whitecalf has been elected defeating incumbent Laurence Paskemin who came in with 185 votes. Rod Atcheynum finished with 147.

Whitecalf has six years previous experience in the role of chief.

Among Chief Whitecalf’s goals ahead, she plans to lobby for road upgrades to provincial standards and for more housing for the First Nation. She also wants to work towards purchasing a charter bus for youth and elder activities.

To fill six positions on council, incumbents Hazen Paskemin and Trina Albert, as well as candidates Isaac Thomas, Janice Kennedy, Omer White and Donovan Arcand were elected. A total of 22 candidates vied for the seats.
