Battlefords Climate Action group walks to raise awareness on Global Climate Strike day

For Russell Charlton fighting climate change is an issue he feels passionate about today and for the future.

That’s why the Rural Municipality of Meota resident is among the volunteers in the new group called Battlefords Climate Action.

He joined a small but hardy group of peaceful protesters of all ages who marched in the snow in downtown North Battleford Friday as part of the Global Climate Strike day of activities happening around the world. Participants walked from the North Battleford Library along 101 St. while handing out information pamphlets about the issue.

“I’ve encountered personally that there are a number of people in our area who don’t understand the science on climate change,” Charlton said. “So we have information there about what the actual scientific consensus is, the strength of that consensus, and also pointing out that there have been powerful interests trying to deceive people about climate change. That’s why there is a lot of misunderstanding out there.”

The Battlefords Climate Action group was formed following the last Global Day of Action. The organization also has a Facebook page presence.

“We’re here as part of millions of people worldwide who are participating in climate strikes all around the globe,” Charlton said. “This is a movement that was started by students, youth who are really concerned about their future and what climate change means for them. We’re taking part in that to support those youth, their right to a future and to promote action on climate change.”
