Close call for two firefighters battling garage fire

Nov 29, 2019 | 11:23 AM

Two firefighters had a close call when helping put out a garage fire in North Battleford.

North Battleford Fire and Emergency Services responded to a fire at a single detached garage at the 1000 block of 109 Street at 6:44 p.m. Wednesday.

No injuries were reported to any citizens or firefighters.

The fire department indicated in its release no one was home at the time of the fire and the property appeared to be vacant and secured.

Two firefighters narrowly escaped injury when a power line burned off as they were advancing a hose line to the structure.

The initial crew that responded was said to have used extreme caution to battle the blaze while waiting for SaskPower to de-energize the line. The crew was able to contain the fire so no other surrounding properties sustained any damages.

It was reported the garage sustained major interior damage in the blaze. The adjacent power pole and lines were also damaged. Power was out in some of the surrounding area for a few hours.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
