Glaslyn Central School gearing up to host senior boys provincials this weekend

The Glaslyn Central School Jets’ senior boys volleyball team will host 1A Senior Boys Provincials Nov. 22 and 23 in front of the hometown crowd at the school gymnasium.

Half of the tournament’s games will be played in Glaslyn, while the other half will be played in nearby Medstead, as the two neighboring communities will split hosting duties this year.

The tournament will feature fourteen of the top teams from across Saskatchewan making the trip to the local high school, including communities as far as Mossbank, Rouleau and Fox Valley.

For the Jets, however, the team will be ready to bring the heat in their own right.

The Glaslyn senior boys took home a first place finish in three tournaments this year. They then followed up their stellar regular season with another gold medal at conferences two weekends ago, and a silver place finish at regionals last weekend.

Head coach of the team, Charmaine Hicks said a real key to the group’s prowess on the court this season has been their leadership shown by the veteran players and collective dedication to the task at hand.

“We have six Grade 12s that are fairly strong leaders and they really bring the team together,” she said. “They are a really great group of kids to coach and are a determined group [who] work well together. On the court they can [also] evaluate and change their style of play to suit the team they are playing against.”

Many on the team gained a wealth of their experience just two seasons ago, when the Jets once again punched their ticket to provincials.

A few have also picked up additional playing experience as part of the local club team as well, helping build and develop their skills to where they are today.

Hicks said the anticipation of the weekend is only helped by the wide range of support the team has received from their school community at large, with a palpable buzz in the halls ahead of the big weekend.

“We have had a lot of excitement,” she said. “We have had lots of students and staff doing all they can to get the school ready, so it has been a really good vibe in the school.”

Glaslyn Central School will play three games on opening day of provincials, all at their home gym. The team will play Frontier at 1 p.m., Muenster at 3 p.m. and Rouleau at 5 p.m.
