Sharp rise in reports of CRA tax scam says Battlefords RCMP

Nov 8, 2019 | 3:56 PM

Battlefords RCMP say they have received a sharp rise in the number of reports of a CRA tax scam over the past week.

They ask the public to report the incidents to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre (CAFC) by phone at 1-888-495-8501 or online.

The RCMP and the CAFC are working with international law enforcement partners to disrupt and dismantle the illegal call centre network in India, which is responsible for the CRA tax scam and other mass marketing related scams.

Efforts from September 2018 to January 2019 have resulted in approximately 40 call centres being dismantled and the arrest of over 60 people who are now facing prosecution in India.

In a media release, the RCMP said they continue to build leads and gather information on the location of the call centres.

Officers offered these tips to help avoid the CRA tax scam:

  • The CRA will not call and threaten you to pay a tax debt
  • The CRA will not call, leave a voice message, text or email you advising of a warrant of arrest for a tax debt
  • The CRA will not request you pay a tax debt through the use of cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin or gift cards, or money transfers
  • The CRA will not have you deported if you do not pay an owed tax debt
