The case involving a man facing a charge in the death of Roger Standingwater on Thunderchild First Nation last year has been adjourned while the accused obtains legal counsel.

Ivor Antoine Wapass, 44, who is in custody, is charged with second-degree murder in the death of Standingwater, 57, on Sept. 15, 2018. Wapass was arrested Nov. 1, 2019.

He made his first appearance in North Battleford Provincial Court Monday.

While Wapass seeks counsel, Crown is still preparing its disclosure. Wapass must abide by a no contact order for a list of seven individuals whose names are under a publication ban.

According to the RCMP, the investigation began when officers responded to an unresponsive male at a home on the First Nation on Sept. 15, 2018. They arrived and found Standingwater in medical distress. When paramedics arrived, he was pronounced deceased.

To assist with the Turtleford RCMP investigation, officers from the North Battleford RCMP’s general investigation and identification sections responded, along with the nothern RCMP Major Crimes Unit.

Outside of court, a member of Standingwater’s family who didn’t wish to provide her name said: “We’re glad that it’s finally here. This happened last September [in 2018], and we’re really pleased that they finally officially laid the charges.”

Wapass is scheduled to appear in court again on Nov. 18.
