BMF Bucks begin quest for third-straight championship

There may be eight teams in the Kinsmen Football League (KFL) pee wee ranks, but only one has claimed the league championship each of the last two years.

The Battlefords Minor Football (BMF) Bucks will begin their quest for a third-straight league title Sunday, Oct. 27, as the team will kick off their post-season against the Martensville Maddogs in Saskatoon.

Expectations are high once again this year for the Bucks, after the program made noise wrapping up another successful season a perfect 7-0. Over the last two years, the Bucks have lost just a single game.

Despite the wealth of success, head coach, Paul Fransoo said the team isn’t celebrating anything yet. With a win Sunday, the Bucks can again punch their ticket to the KFL Final, for an opportunity at a championship three-peat.

The coach said to get there, however, the team must remain locked in on the task at hand.

“[Another championship] is the ultimate goal, and the kids I think have really bought into our system and our structure,” Fransoo said. “They have managed to stay really quite focused for a young group of players, and we have a really great group of kids.”

In addition to the players’ contributions on the field, Fransoo also said the team’s current pursuit of a third-straight championship would not be possible without the dedication of parents and his fellow coaching staff behind the scenes.

“We have a great group of parents who have been working hard to make sure the kids are there, and I can’t say enough about the group I work with,” Fransoo said. “They are very solid and stoic in how we approach things, as far as the structure of our team and the way we practice. [Referring to Sunday], we’ll just keep our heads down and work hard, and hopefully we come out in the right place on the other side against Martensville.”

Sunday’s game will be played at Saskatoon’s Sasktel Soccer Centre. Kick-off will get underway at 12 p.m.
