North Stars thaw Ice Wolves in heated battle, 4-1

Sep 28, 2019 | 12:51 AM

The Battlefords North Stars continued to roll Friday night, taking home a 4-1 win over the La Ronge Ice Wolves at Mel Hegland Uniplex in La Ronge.

Noah Form, Matthias Urbanski, Quintin Loon-Stewardson and Austin Becker scored for the Stars in the victory, while goaltender Parker Rey stopped 32 of 33 shots against for the win.

For Rey, the victory served as his second SJHL win, in just his second game. Rey has now stopped 51 of a total 53 shots against through his opening two starts. (Martin Martinson/battlefordsNOW Staff)

La Ronge defenceman Logan Holm opened the scoring for the Ice Wolves just 4:51 into the opening period.

His second of the season, the goal came off a nice passing play, as the blue liner snapped his shot home shortly after La Ronge’s opening man advantage of the game; 1-0 Ice Wolves.

Holm’s would be the lone goal of the opening frame.

In the second, Noah Form pulled the Stars even, making it 1-1 just past the midway mark of the period.

Cashing in on a shot high to the far side, Form’s goal marked the first of the season for the defenceman.

Heading into the third period tied at a single goal apiece, it didn’t take long for the Stars to pull ahead.

Matthias Urbanski picked up his second of the season, and second in two games just 13 seconds into the third period. In the blink of an eye, the Stars had established their first lead of the hockey game at 2-1.

Just under 2:30 later, Urbanski’s linemate Quintin Loon-Stewardson lit the lamp as well, on the power play, to expand the lead to 3-1 Stars.

For Loon-Stewardson, the goal marked the forward’s seventh of the season and fourth in two games.

Late in the third period, with the La Ronge net empty as the team pushed to get back in the game late, Austin Becker provided the Stars with the cherry on top.

Making it 4-1, Becker’s empty netter sealed the deal. With the tally, the 19-year-old has now also scored seven goals through the opening six games this season, including at least a single tally in each game so far.

The Stars will return to action Saturday night looking for a repeat performance in the back half of the teams’ back-to-back set with La Ronge this weekend.

Saturday’s game will be broadcast on 93.3 The Rock. The Ultra-Print Pregame Show will begin at 7:15 p.m. with puck drop at 7:30 p.m.
