Sep 26, 2019 | 11:41 AM

The Saskatchewan RCMP have asked police in Prince Albert to investigate allegations of assault after internal and external complaints about the level of force used by a Battlefords RCMP officer in May.

A 40-yer-old was arrested by a Battlefords’ constable following a report of a man causing a disturbance in public on May 14, 2019.

To assist with the arrest, a second constable attended the scene. While the man was handcuffed and lying on the ground, a physical altercation occurred between the second constable and the 40-year-old, RCMP said in a press release.

Internal and external complaints about concerning the level of force used by the second constable during the altercation were filed and the Battlefords RCMP reviewed the incident.

The 40-year-old suspect, however, did not report any injuries as a result of the incident.

Based on the findings, the detachment ordered a statutory investigation and an RCMP Code of Conduct investigation be conducted.

Saskatchewan RCMP asked the Prince Albert Police Service to investigate allegations of assault.

The provincial RCMP will conduct the Code of Conduct investigation on allegations of excessive use of force.

Until both investigations are complete, the constable has been suspended from duty with pay.
