Officer sustains non-life threatening injury during shooting outside Turtleford

Sep 24, 2019 | 4:01 PM

An RCMP officer is out of hospital after they were shot outside of Turtleford Tuesday morning.

Police said in a media release that officers from the Turtleford detachment were called to multiple reports of a dangerous, possibly impaired driver in the area early in the day.

As two members approached the vehicle, one was shot and sustained a serious but non-life threatening injury and was taken to hospital in Turtleford. Officers returned fire.

Assistant Commissioner Mark Fisher, the RCMP’s commanding officer in Saskatchewan, was shy on details while speaking at a media conference Tuesday afternoon in Regina to discuss the incident.

When probed on details like how the suspect was hurt or whether he could confirm it was in fact the suspect who shot the officer, Fisher said he didn’t have those details as the Regina Police Service will handle the investigation.

He said incidents like these stick in an officer’s mind no matter where they happen in the country.

“The reality is, is that each of us, when we strap on the uniform and go to work in the morning, face these types of risks,” Fisher said. “Now, not all of us encounter them in the course of a career but the reality is that things can change in a matter of seconds in any call that we’re responding to. This was reported to us at least as an erratic driver.”

An increased police presence remained following the incident west of Mervin on the Highway 794 grid. The public was asked to avoid the area.
