Fundraising gala for R.M. fire department offers night out for a good cause

The R.M. of North Battleford is hosting a Volunteer Firefighters Fundraising Gala on Nov. 9 at the Don Ross Centre auditorium.

Fire Chief Neil Good said the event is an opportunity for people of the rural municipality and area to come together and get to know the firefighters.

“To our gentlemen and one lady, that is very important,” he said. “So much so, that we do have station clothing that we wear and that we will wear [for the event] as well so people can visually see who we are, and pick us out of the crowd.”

Good said the evening will feature a presentation of how the department started, and how it has developed in the short time since its inception.

“We want to let people know and let the R.M. know that yes, we are a young fire department,” he said. “We have a massive heart and we have a lot of equipment and a lot of knowledge. From myself with many years in the fire industry as well as others, just to make everybody aware of what we can do.”

In addition to dinner, there will be a silent auction and live auction on the night. The evening will conclude with a dance.

Administrator Debbie Arsenault said the fundraiser offers an opportunity to show support for the new fire hall and the work the team does.

“[In addition to fighting fires], the department serves as the rescue unit for the highways that surround the R.M. as well,” she said. “Our fire department responds to any highway that falls within the R.M., [responding to] motor vehicle accidents and those kinds of things.”

Four highways run through the R.M. The department has mutual aid agreements with some of the departments that border the rural municipality, meaning the team has to cover a lot of ground.

While it is a big job, Arsenault said the new department has come along great.

“We have 20 people who are very dedicated,” she said. “They have had weekly training since the fire department started. We have the equipment that we need right now to do the job they need to do, but of course there is always something new or different coming down the line so we just want to make sure we always have the funds to support [what is needed].”

Construction on the new fire hall could begin as early as next week.

Tickets for the gala are available at the municipal office.
