Police seize cocaine, guns in traffic stop, suspect faces nearly 50 charges

A standard police traffic stop led to 49 charges for a man from the Sweetgrass First Nation.

On Aug. 30, members of the Saskatchewan RCMP Roving Traffic Unit attempted to stop a speeding vehicle on Highway 16 near Maidstone.

After fleeing from officers, the vehicle then drove into oncoming traffic. Due to safety concerns, the pursuit was terminated.

Later, the vehicle was located near Cut Knife. Again, it fled from officers attempting to get the driver to stop. Members deployed two spike belts and the vehicle was rendered inoperable. The suspect fled on foot and was later found on the roof of a residence.

Mounties searched the vehicle and found three prohibited firearms, ammunition and a small amount of cocaine.

Nakota Pooyak, 26, was taken into custody and charged with possession of a firearm with a tampered serial number, eight counts of possessing weapons or ammunition contrary to an order, resisting arrest, five counts of failing to comply with an undertaking, trespassing at night, two counts of common nuisance, and two counts of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle.

He’s also charged with two counts of flight from a peace officer, two counts of operating a vehicle while prohibited, possession of property obtained by crime less than $5,000, three counts of failure to comply with probation, three counts of unsafe storage of a firearm, three counts of possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, three counts of carrying a concealed weapon, three counts of possession of a firearm knowing it is unauthorized, three counts of possession of a prohibited firearm without a licence, three counts possession of a weapon obtained by crime and possession of cocaine.

Pooyak appeared in St. Walburg Provincial Court on Sept. 3.
