The North Battleford City Kinsmen Band to celebrate 70th anniversary

Aug 30, 2019 | 2:00 PM

The North Battleford City Kinsmen (NBCK) Band will be celebrating 70 years of sharing their music with the Battlefords. They will be holding a concert titled You Can’t Stop the Beat on October 20 at 2 p.m. at the Dekker Centre.

Local band members will be joined by alumni and friends from around the province and beyond, with every decade of the band`s history represented.

Band Director Michael Alstad said it will be an afternoon of music everyone can enjoy.

“People can expect fun music accessible for all ages. It is not too stuffy, not too poppy. It is sort of what the Kinsmen band has always been, performing music that is audience friendly and enjoyable for all ages.”

The NBCK Band started back in 1949 and has a rich history of performances. They have performed both locally and internationally. A highlight was performing for Queen Elizabeth in Ottawa during Canada Day celebrations in 1997. In 2003 the band went to Germany and took part in a marching competition with bands from around the world.

“Loads of performances in between where the band has toured through Canada and the United States. There have been lots of positive memories at every stage [of the band’s history],” Alstad said.

In the 1950s the band even performed a concert at the Civic Centre with the entire band on skates.

“It’s really interesting even looking at the pictures of that. How did they do that? How many times did someone wipe out and how did they keep the instruments going? That would have been something to see,” Alstad said.

The weekend leading up to the concert will be full of band activities. On Friday, Oct. 18 the band will have a meet and greet as well as hold rehearsals for the show. Saturday will be a special dinner and dance at the NBCK Band Hall. Tickets are available for the dinner and dance through the band’s website.

Registration for the 2019/20 season will take place on Sept. 11 at 7 p.m. at the NBCK Band Hall. The City Kinsmen Band offers bands for all ages and abilities and they invite everyone who is interested to join them and find a group that is right them.

Tickets are available at the Dekker Centre or through the Dekker Centre box office.
