Sixth suspect in Laverdiere homicide investigation remanded after first court appearance

The sixth person charged in connection to Tiki Laverdiere’s death made her first court appearance on Thursday and will return at the end of August.

Soaring Eagle Whitstone was arrested on Aug. 6 in Lloydminster and charged with first-degree murder, kidnapping, improperly interfering with a human body and theft of a motor vehicle.

She is also facing charges for breaching her curfew, failing to appear in court and failing to report to a probation officer.

Judge O’Hanlon ordered the 33-year-old to have no contact with several individuals who may be co-accused or offer evidence in the case.

The Onion Lake woman was remanded into custody and will be back in North Battleford Provincial Court on Aug. 30 via closed-circuit television.

Three others are charged with first-degree murder and two with accessory after the fact to murder.

Nicole Cook, 36, was arrested in Fort Saskatchewan on July 31. She is charged with first-degree murder, kidnapping, improperly interfering with a human body and theft of a motor vehicle.

She is the mother of Tristen Cook-Buckle, whose funeral Laverdiere attended on April 27 on the Thunderchild First Nation, days before we was reported missing on May 12.

Jesse Sangster, 23, was arrested in Edmonton on July 28. He is facing charges for accessory after the fact to murder and theft of a motor vehicle.

Both appeared in court on Aug. 2 and had their matters adjourned until Aug. 30.

Shayla Orthner and Danita Thomas are charged with first-degree murder, kidnapping, improperly interfering with a human body and theft of a motor vehicle.

They were the first two arrested in the case on July 20 and 23. Both were remanded into custody and will return to court on Sept. 6 via closed-circuit television from Pine Grove Correctional Centre in Prince Albert.

Brent Checkosis, 18, is facing charges for accessory after the fact to murder, improperly interfering with a human body and theft of a motor vehicle. He was remanded until Sept. 6.

Laverdiere was reported missing on May 12 and last seen in North Battleford on April 29.

Human remains were found in a rural area outside of the city on July 11 and confirmed to be the Edmonton woman on July 17.
