Delisle Chiefs hire familiar face into coaching staff

Delisle will have a familiar face on the bench to start the season.

The Delisle Chiefs have hired Anthony Radke as an assistant coach for the 2019/20 season.

Radke has been described as a heart and soul type of player. The Spiritwood native was a four-year player with the Chiefs from 2014 to 2018 and was named the seventh captain in franchise history.

He was a reliable penalty killer who also put up 116 points (47 goals, 69 assists) in 145 games with Delisle.

Radke said he bled blue as a player with Delisle and is honoured to be back with the Chiefs.

“I’m very excited to be back with the organization. I’ve thought of this team as a second family for a long time. I’m looking forward to the start of the season,” he said.

Delisle Chiefs Head Coach and General Manager Eric Ditto said that Radke’s attributes from his playing days should lend to an easy move to coaching.

“As someone who played for me in the past, he has the leadership skills to easily transition to coaching. I look forward to seeing his experience as a captain turn into a leadership role of a different kind,” Ditto said.

Ditto said Radke’s ability to be a role player is one of the strengths he will bring to the coaching staff.

“He kind of did it all. He spent a little time on the power play when we needed him and stuff like that. He was kind of a gritty player who accepted all roles and I think with some of the younger players on our team it will help them understand that it takes all kinds of players to build a winning team,” he said.

Ditto also said building familiarity from within the organization is something he sees as a positive in adding Radke to his staff.

“Anthony is going to be a great fit for our staff. His passion for the game and the Chiefs is clear. He’s a guy who knows our league very well and knows what I expect as a coach,” he said.
