Battleford Street Fest now set for September

Aug 2, 2019 | 4:43 PM

Despite a rough start, the Battleford street festival will go on.

The Battleford Spirit Group volunteers who are organizing the event have decided to set a new date for the festival, as the event had to be cancelled abruptly due to a sudden storm that picked up on July 18, as soon as the event commenced.

The new date has been announced as Saturday, Sept. 21, running in the afternoon.

“We are going to have it in the day because the evenings are shorter,” said Gail Sack, one of the organizers. “We are moving forward, and hopefully the next [date] works better for us.”

After encountering high winds and heavy rain on the day the street festival was originally scheduled for in July, organizers had to stop the event shortly after it started.

Sack said the sudden wind affected the vendors’ tents as well as some of their wares on display.

“Some of them lost some of their products,” Sack said. “It was unfortunate because it was an exciting day. It was starting to set up, and it looked like we were going to have a good attendance. People were excited; then, Mother Nature had something else in store for us.”

Sack said organizers have reached out to the vendors and many expect to come back.

The aim of the event is to help residents get to know their neighbours and businesses, and show their pride for Battleford. The festival will include food trucks and vendor tables for people to visit.

Organizers are also planning a 40-minute free horse-drawn wagon ride to see some of the historical sites in Battleford. The event will include live music, a sidewalk sale, and games for children.

“I hope everyone comes out, and Mother Nature co-operates this time,” Sack said.

The festival will take place from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.
