Latest arrests in Tiki Laverdiere homicide investigation appear in court

Carol Laverdiere and Diane Morin sat beside each other as the latest pair charged in Tiki Laverdiere’s homicide investigation made their first court appearance.

Carol is Tiki’s mother and Diane is the mother of Ashley Morin, who has been missing for over one year. The two have become close after their daughter’s disappearances in North Battleford.

Nicole Cook, 36, and Jesse Sangster, 23, were arrested on July 31 and 28 in Fort Saskatchewan and Edmonton, respectively.

Cook is the mother of Tristen Cook-Buckle, the man whose funeral Tiki attended on April 27 on the Thunderchild First Nation days before she was last heard from.

Cook is charged with first-degree murder, kidnapping, improperly interfering with a human body and theft of a motor vehicle. Sangster is facing charges for accessory after the fact to murder and theft of a motor vehicle.

Both were remanded into custody and ordered to have no contact with several individuals who may be co-accused or offer evidence in the case. Both will return to court on Aug. 30.

Shayla Orthner, Danita Thomas, and Brent Checkosis are also charged in connection to Tiki’s death.

Orthner and Thomas are charged with first-degree murder, kidnapping, improperly interfering with a human body and theft of a motor vehicle. Checkosis is facing charges for accessory after the fact to murder, improperly interfering with a human body and theft of a motor vehicle.

All three will appear in court later this morning.

Laverdiere’s remains were found in a rural area outside of North Battleford on July 11. The Edmonton woman was reported missing on May 12.
