Making it Rain

Fire Department hosting pop-up spray park to help beat the heat

Aug 1, 2019 | 5:28 PM

The North Battleford Fire Department is going to make it rain tomorrow afternoon to help residents beat the heat.

The region is expected to reach 28 degrees today and rise into the low 30s on Friday, with both days having a high humidex. The city’s fire department is urging residents to take precautions to protect themselves, family, friends and neighbors over the next few days.

To help people cool off on Friday, the department will host a pop-up spray park. The impromptu park will be at Connaught School from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m.

They will use a 100 foot aerial ladder that has the ability to spray water out of the end. They will extend the ladder out over the park and then spray cold water down on anyone who wishes to partake.

“The spray ladder is usually used to protect firefighters from heat coming off of a building,” said Fire Chief Trevor Brice. “But on this occasion, we’ll extend the ladder out over the park and use that with cool water for people to cool off.”

The pop up spray parks are a great way for fire departments to interact and give back to the communities the operate in, he said. They have been successful in other fire departments across Canada.

“It is something that has been done in a couple fire departments across the country. I think it [started] in Vancouver,” Brice added. “When you do get this hot weather, it just this sort of temporary measure and something we can do to support the community in keeping cool. At one point we are looking at potentially 36 degrees for tomorrow.”

The pop-up spray park will be a great way for kids to cool off but that does not mean adults have to miss out on the fun either, he added.

“Kids can keep cool and play and have fun but it’s not just for kids, the parents and adults can come and cool off and have some fun. It is an opportunity for all to keep cool in what will possibly be hot and humid weather.”
