Driver runs down antelope in lentil field, removes antlers

Conservation officers are investigating after an antelope was run down and killed in a lentil field early last week.

On either July 22 or 23, a driver drove into a field of standing lentils and chased down and fatally struck an antelope. The perpetrators removed the animal’s horns and left the rest of it to waste in the field.

The incident occurred four miles east of the hamlet of Stranraer, along Highway 31, and officers believe the vehicle was travelling eastbound at the time.

Conservation officers attended the scene and recovered evidence but the public’s help is needed to solve the case.

“We don’t want to see this at anytime. This kind of thing steals opportunities from legitimate hunters and can jeopardize future wildlife populations,” Conservation Officer Kevin Harrison said. “Anytime we see this kind of stuff we investigate it as a serious offence.”

Harrison added those involved could be charged with a variety of crimes.

“There are a few things the individual can be charged with including unlawful hunting, unlawful possession of wildlife for removing the animals antlers, waste of game, damage of crops and using a vehicle in a prohibited manner,” he said.

Conservation officers rely on the public to solve incidents like this. Many cases do get solved with information provided by the public.

Callers can remain anonymous and may be eligible for a cash reward if their information leads to a conviction.
