April Wine to take stage in N.B.

Aug 23, 2017 | 2:00 PM

Legendary rockers April Wine will be appearing at the Gold Eagle Casino in North Battleford on Sept. 22 and according to marketing co-ordinator Shane Fluney, it’s a privilege to have the group perform at the casino once again.

“We (Gold Eagle Casino) are absolutely thrilled to welcome back April Wine to the Battlefords,” Fluney said. “Having such an iconic Canadian band being the first to play on our newly renovated stage will make for a much more special evening.”

April Wine was formed in 1969 in Waverley, Nova Scotia which is a suburb of Halifax by brothers David and Ritchie Henman. They were joined by cousin Jim Henman on bass and Myles Goodwyn on lead vocals.

In his autobiography, Goodwyn said the group’s original members chose the name April Wine because they thought the two words sounded good together.

Goodwyn, the last original band member, will be joined on the Gold Eagle Casino stage by guitarist Brian Greenway who has been with the group since 1977, bassist Richard Lanthier and Roy Nichols on drums.

“We had a tremendous response to tickets when we announced the concert,” Fluney added. “The show sold out with a month of the announcement, it was great.”

To date, April Wine has fifteen studio albums, three live compilations and an induction into the Canadian Music Industry Hall of Fame in 2010.

April Wine had six top 10 hits in Canada including You Could Have Been a Lady which reached number two on the Canadian music charts and in 1977 You Won’t Dance With Me was certified gold.
