Humane Society in need of volunteers to help at bingos

Jul 8, 2019 | 12:23 PM

Bouncing bingo balls and playing catch with Rover may not seem to tie together but they do.

Whenever the Battlefords Humane Society volunteers help at the Carousel Bingo in downtown North Battleford, the society receives a donation for its animals so they have a better quality of life.

However, the society is currently short on volunteers, impacting its ability to work the bingos.

“Bingos are definitely a huge need for us,” Shelter Coordinator Michelle Spark said. “We get a lot of funding from the bingos.”

She said the Humane Society has only about 10 volunteers for all its needs and desperately requires more.

If anyone can spare a few hours to volunteer, Spark said it would be appreciated. She added those who volunteer at the bingo will receive training.

“We don’t have enough people to work bingos and our poor bingo coordinator is going crazy trying to find people,” she said.

When its volunteers work a certain number of shifts at the bingo events, the Humane Society receives a donation from a portion of the bingo hall profits as well as from Saskatchewan Liquor and Gaming Authority (SLGA).

The donations help the non-profit have more money to buy pet food and do a lot more to ensure the animals in its care get the best support they need until they find a permanent home.

“That money can be used to purchase items we need for the shelter – food, cages, supplies,” Spark said. “It can be used for educational purposes for the staff to become better trained to be able to do what we do everyday.”

In addition to the bingo help, the society needs volunteers to take on specific duties around the shelter at various times, as well as to lend a hand at its fundraisers, such as barbecues and dances.

The shelter is also looking for more homes for its animals.

It has 82 cats currently, about twice its capacity, and 26 dogs, a little higher than space permits.
