SUPREME COURT HEARING FOR ALBERTA PARENTS

The Supreme Court of Canada is to hear an appeal today by a couple convicted after they used homemade remedies instead of seeking medical attention for their son who died of bacterial meningitis. David and Collet Stephan were found guilty in 2016 of failing to provide the necessaries of life to 19-month-old Ezekiel in 2012.

SENTENCING BEGINS IN B.C. POLYGAMY CASE

Sentencing arguments are expected to be heard today for the two British Columbia men convicted of polygamy for having multiple wives. A B.C. Supreme Court judge found 62-year-old Winston Blackmore guilty last July of marrying two dozen women, while his co-accused, 54-year-old James Oler, was found to have married five women.

PRISON SERVICE TO USHER IN NEEDLE EXCHANGES

The federal prison service plans to introduce needle exchange programs in a bid to reduce the incidence of infectious diseases among inmates. The Correctional Service says the program will be unfurled initially at one men’s and one women’s institution, and the lessons learned will inform a full national roll-out.

MOST ILLEGAL CROSSINGS THROUGH QUEBEC BORDER

Quebec continues to receive the vast majority of asylum seekers in Canada, with 96 per cent of illegal crossings into the country so far in 2018 happening at its border with the United States. RCMP statistics show of the 7,612 people who crossed illegally into the country during the first four months of the year, 7,307 came into Quebec. Manitoba and British Columbia each received about 150 asylum seekers during the same time frame.

GOVERNOR GENERAL BEGINS ALBERTA VISIT

Canada’s Governor General is paying her first official visit to Alberta today starting with a stop at the legislature. Julie Payette is to spend the day in Edmonton before travelling to Calgary on Wednesday. In Edmonton, she is to make a speech to the legislature and meet with officials of Canmet Energy in nearby Devon to learn more about their work on developing cleaner fossil fuels.

JETS-GOLDEN KNIGHTS SERIES TIEED 1-1.

Jonathan Marchessault scored twice as Vegas beat the Jets 3-1 in Winnipeg to send the best-of-seven Western Conference final to Sin City tied at a game apiece. Games 3 and 4 go Wednesday and Friday in Vegas. Game 5 will be back in Winnipeg on Sunday afternoon. Winnipeg has now lost three of its past four at Bell MTS Place in these playoffs after compiling the best home record in the NHL during the regular-season at 32-7-2.
