Traditional hockey tournament cancelled

Feb 1, 2016 | 5:31 PM

After the second straight year on the shelf, a 50-year-old hockey tournament seems to be finished.

The Battlefords Indian Metis Friendship Centre All-Native hockey tournament has been cancelled again this year due to a lack of interest from teams.

According to Jackie Kennedy with the Friendship Centre, teams seem less interested in participating in full contact games like they used to.

“We decided again this year, we’re not going to invest a whole lot of time an energy to it. I mean we did it for 50 years and we were the longest running tournament,” Kennedy explained.

However she added the tournament could return if there was renewed interest.

“It’s not guaranteed, I can’t say that because I’m not our board of directors. If they decide one year they want to do it then maybe, but right now it’s just not coming back for 2016.”

The tournament was scheduled for the spring.
