Heritage Sign Painting Workshop – WDM

The North Battleford Western Development Museum is hosting a Heritage Sign Painting Workshop April 23 and 24th

Participants will learn the basics of heritage sign painting through project work. Day 1 starts with a discussion about the history and basics of traditional sign painting. This will include the process of lettering and the restoration of signs in general. It will also include the steps to research and re-create signs and graphics that were used in the past. Day 2 will be a hands-on class. Students will each work on their own project sign panels.

About the Instructor:

The course instructor is Rick Janzen of Streamline Studios Inc.

Rick started his career in the sign business in 1978, back when everything was still done by hand. In 1986 he opened Streamline Studios Inc. in Calgary, AB. He has worked on a number of projects across western Canada including work at heritage sites, with restoration groups, private collectors and museums. He is also listed as a sign painter with the IATSE 212 Motion Picture Union and has worked on numerous feature films, television shows and series as a sign painter and scenic artist.

In 2014, Rick received the Calgary Heritage Authority’s Lion Award, in the category of Heritage Trades/Craftspeople. Although the sign industry, and how signs are made, has gone through many changes over the last 20 years, Rick has stayed with the time honoured tradition of painting signs with a brush and paint. There’s just something about the look of a hand painted sign that can’t achieve with the computer and digital printing.
