Tavia Laliberte elected chair of Sask Sport

A Battlefords college president can now add the title of Chair of Sask Sports to her list of accomplishments.

Tavia Laliberte, president and CEO of North West College, was elected to the position at the sports federation’s annual general meeting in Regina June 11. She received the honour after volunteering with the organization for over five years and after serving three years as a contributing member on the Sask Sport board.

Laliberte said she was pleased to be a part of an organization which is inclusive of the whole province, including rural Saskatchewan, and all ages, creeds and genders.

“The work they do is just amazing,” Laliberte said. “In the Battlefords, so many of our sports and organizations are supported by Sask Sport. Almost all of the minor sports organisations…soccer, hockey, et cetera. They also participate in community funding projects, like summer camps for students.”

Laliberte was nominated by the Rivers West organization, which focuses on the Battlefords and Meadow Lake region. According to her, she is proud to bring a unique rural perspective to the bigger city centres.

Before serving as chair, Laliberte was an acting member of the Aboriginal Sport Leadership Council. As a Métis person herself, she was able to provide a First Nations the perspective.

“It was an opportunity to reflect on some of the decisions and program priorities of Sask Sport, and ensure they have some alignment with the aboriginal communities of Saskatchewan,” Laliberte said. “I’m happy to be one of the few Aboriginal chairs. It’s always important to have some leadership with Aboriginal people in the province.”

Laliberte was proud of the sport organization’s accomplishments but was also looking forward to the future.

“There is lots of work being done around women in sport,” Laliberte said. “These are some of the priorities of Sask Sport. It ranges from developmental sport right up to excellence.”

She believed participation in sport has translated into her own personal and academic success.

Laliberte will serve as chair for a one-year term. Sask Sport is an organization which seeks to provide support to over 6,000 sports organisations and teams around the province.
