BTEC building construction moving towards completion

Jun 23, 2016 | 2:00 PM

While the spotlight might have been on the construction of its new building, The Battlefords Trade and Education Centre (BTEC) executive director said the community’s support of the project was the best part of her year.

“…we got that $2.3 million raised and My Community Cares really stepped up,” Mona Leece said adding the Cares fundraising campaign reached its $2.3 million goal in November.

The centre’s new building has been under construction for roughly a year and Leece said the organization should be able to move in come September.

Some big improvements include better heating and air conditioning, larger spaces for activities both established programs and new ones. The building is also one floor, an advantage over its current location for people with vision and mobility problems.

BTEC board vice president Lyndon Heinemann said moving Leece into the role of executive director will really help with the up-coming move.

“She’s been here for a long time, 20 years, and knows a lot of history of the organization and culture of the organization,” he said. “That was really important to the board moving forward with a big transition for our participants, having someone who really understood the culture of this organization and its history to help us make that move.”

Heinemann said the board is looking forward to the move and although the major fundraising is over, the organization will need to continue to raise money for a few years pay everything off.
