Unity golfer wins Sask. Amateur Men’s Championship

A 21-year-old golfer from Unity is the men’s amateur golf champion of Saskatchewan

Justin Wood shot an even par 288 over four rounds to be crowned champion of the 105th Saskatchewan Amateur Men’s Championships in Warman from July 18 to 21. He finished two strokes ahead of runner-up Jehremy Ryde of Saskatoon.

Wood said it’s an unbelievable feeling to win the championship and he felt his good play was rewarded.

“I hit the ball well, I chipped and putted well, it was a pretty complete game out there. I just had a couple of shaky moments with the putting on the front nine but I shored it up on the back nine and executed the shots when I needed to,” Wood said.

Wood golfed this past school year for the University of Montevallo Falcons, an NCAA Division II team in Alabama, after two years playing golf at Lethbridge College. He will be returning to Montevallo in the fall.

With this win, Wood will be one of the golfers representing Saskatchewan at the 2016 Canadian Men’s Amateur Championship in Gatineau, Que. from Aug. 8 to 11.

This will be Wood’s third time at the Canadian Men’s Amateur Championship and he said it’s been a great event to take part in.

“It was an unreal experience and being the guy from Saskatchewan to come out on top and getting to represent again is an unreal feeling,” he said.
