Rockette models support important cause

Oct 14, 2016 | 12:15 PM

The Rockette calendar launch has become a bit of a tradition in the Battlefords, but many of the women who appear between the pages do it for more than being known as “Ms. October.”

On Oct. 13, the Rock 93.3 Rockette calendar was unveiled at Bennigan’s in North Battleford with roughly 100 people in attendance. The theme this year’s calendar was cosplay and models were photographed as their favorite super hero. Those who attended the event could buy calendars, meet the models and bid on autographed posters.

What some may not realize, is proceeds of the calendar go towards breast cancer research. Amanda Coupal dressed as Ms. Marvel for the October page and said she wanted to be a Rockette, not only because she loves cosplay, but had a brush with cancer herself.

“Breast cancer is one of the most common cancers in women, so I was very scared when I found out and panicked a little bit,” Coupal said. “I was having chest pains back in February, so I went to get a mammogram on the advice of some co workers and they found a lump.”

Coupal said the doctors didn’t remove the lump at the time, but instead decided to monitor it. She returned in September and, thankfully, the mass had shrunk. Coupal said doctors didn’t want to risk agitating it through surgery, instead she will return in April of 2017 for another check-up. She is very optimistic about her prognosis and at only 27-years-old, advised every woman to get checked regardless of their age.

Coupal wasn’t the only model affected by breast cancer. Lindsay Dallyn, dressed as Rider Girl on July’s page, saw how devastating the fight can be.

“A close friend of mine and modeling agent’s mom just died of breast cancer in the last month,” Dallyn said. “She was fighting breast cancer on and off for two decades. I have two aunts who have beaten it and we are currently waiting to see if my grandma has breast cancer.”

Dallyn is a professional model and a former accountant, currently on disability leave, waiting to hear if she needs a fifth spinal surgery. Dallyn has degenerative disk disease, arthritis in her spine and spinal stenosis. She’s had four surgeries on her lower back which is now fused. She said the conditions will not hold her back.

“The modelling is sort of the one thing that is tied to my old self,” Coupal said. “I suffer for it but even if you’re sick, whether you have cancer, if it is pain or whatever it is, you’re still human. You still have the need to do the things you enjoy. I want to be a role model and show people your life doesn’t have to be perfect to do what you love.”

Rockette calendars can be purchased at all Co-op gas stations in the Battlefords, Sobey’s, Ultra Print and T.C. Garage in Cut Knife.
