Local dog found after missing for over a year

In January of 2016, while Regan Crush was away on a seven-day trip, his German shepherd ‘Bullet’ went missing.

But last week, thanks to countless posters, Facebook posts, calls and visits to animal shelters and vet offices, Bullet was reunited with his owner after being missing for nearly 15 months.

“He was 400 km from home – Buffalo Narrows,” Crush said. “It was through a tip on Facebook. My aunt put out another ad and she got a couple pictures sent to her and the first picture didn’t look like him but then the lady sent four more pictures that all looked exactly like him so that got our attention in a hurry. Less than two days after we were there and picked him up.

“It was a long drive but definitely worth it.”

Crush first got Bullet over six years ago, when the puppy was just two to three weeks old.

Despite multiple people looking after him during Crush’s absence, he went missing two days before Crush returned.

“He’s an outside dog so he usually never gets tied up [and]…it wasn’t uncommon for him not to be there one out of the seven days,” Crush said. “But after three days missing, then everyone kind of thought something was up.

“He did have a tag on but we never did get a call and that’s when the search started.”

Crush’s aunt Marlene Kotchorek put a ton of work in beginning that search and she never stopped spreading the message, which ultimately paid off.

“She just went to great extents to get the word out there and to make it known that Bullet was missing,” Crush said. “I’m sure every vet office and animal rescue in the province had a poster.”

The was a point last year, when Crush had given up, and thought Bullet wouldn’t return.

“Yeah, definitely,” he said. “People said ‘Oh, we saw your dog here,’ and we would go there and wouldn’t see anything. It would have been nice to see pictures along the way because usually from pictures an owner can tell ‘That’s my dog and that’s not my dog,’ right away.”

When Bullet was found, there was no collar on him but the people who sent the pictures said he was around their area for nearly a year.

“We got a little bit of information from them, saying he was there for over a year and he was just kind of stray wandering the streets,” Crush said. “They fed him and looked after him I guess until they saw the post and then they were nice enough that they messaged and sent pictures. I think they were sad to see the dog go. He’s a really good dog. But we were sure happy to get him back.”
