Mar 28, 2017 | 3:52 PM

UPDATE: Officers are looking to speak with a man known to the victim in a suspicious death investigation.

Investigators want to speak with Wesley John Veit who they believe has knowledge of the event.

Police are asking those who encounter Veit or knows of his whereabouts to not approach him and call the Unity detachment, 911 or Crime Stoppers.

Members of the public are also asked to avoid the scene in the R.M. of Buffalo where the body was discovered.

The victim in a suspicious death investigation near Wilkie has been identified by the Living Sky School Division as education assistant Heidi Veit.

Police issued a media release today, March 28, which stated its emergency response unit was investigating a suspicious death roughly five kilometres northeast of town.

The school division issued this statement at roughly 3:30 p.m.:

“We have suffered a tragedy at our school. One of our staff members, Heidi Veit, died suddenly and unexpectedly. Heidi was an educational assistant and valued team member and friend at McLurg High School. She will be greatly missed.

“In addition to our grief over the loss of this member of our school community, we are sensitive to the fact that such an event has an impact on our students and staff members. In response, our school has implemented our Crisis Intervention Team to allow students an opportunity to talk about their thoughts and feelings with trained professional staff. We also have outside counselling in place to allow staff members to express their feelings and grief. We will continue with these counselling services in place to support both our students and staff for the foreseeable future.

“At this time, both of our Wilkie schools will remain under the hold and secure lockdown and will do so until the RCMP recommend that this be lifted. The RCMP do not consider the schools to be in any danger, but we agree that this is a precaution we should take at this time. We intend to transport students at the end of the day, as per usual.

“The school community extends our sincere sympathies to Heidi’s family and friends during this very difficult time.”

The RCMP investigation continues at this time and members of the public are advised to stay away from the site where the body was discovered. Police have not confirmed if the deceased is, in fact, Veit.
