Photographer finds beauty in the Battlefords

Nov 15, 2016 | 4:33 PM

For a second year, a local photographer is chronicling the beauty of his hometown in calendar form.

Gilbert Katerynych calls the Battlefords his home, and it’s where he finds most of his inspiration. Last year he decided to showcase his work in a calendar and after the success, decided to run with it again in 2017.

Katerynych’s photography focuses mainly on buildings, landscapes, and skylines.

“I like to look for the old things, the worn out things. Also the skies are a big part of my photography. I’ve always got my eye in the sky, seeing what’s happening,” Katerynych said. “It’s always the quiet places that I tend to photograph.”

Katerynych said people tell him they are surprised they actually live where his photos are taken.

“It’s nice to be able to show people a perspective of the community that they might not otherwise have,” he said.

Katerynych said the response to the calendar has been great. He pointed to Facebook, which helps him share his photos.

“So there’s quite a few, I guess ex [citizens] of the Battlefords area that have since moved on, but when I post these pictures they get reminded of home,” he said.

Katerynych will be selling his calendar, The Battlefords and Beyond 2017, at the Christmas Bazaar in the Alex Dillabough Centre on Dec. 3.
