North West College students rewarded with scholarships

Students at North West College were awarded over $34,000 worth of scholarships.

The college and local businesses presented 77 scholarships to a variety of students at a ceremony on Friday, Nov. 18.

“This is one of my favourite events at the college,” NWC president and CEO Tavia Laliberte said. “Graduation is always special and important, but there’s something joyous about this event and it’s just so nice to see the business community supporting the college.”

Scholarships came from the college and businesses including Kanaweyimik, Gold Eagle Casino and the Jim Pattison Broadcast Group.

Many of the students’ families were there to support them and some brought their kids up to accept the scholarships with them.

“The primary importance is to put money in students’ hands when they most need it, when they’re taking post-secondary programming, but it’s also a great opportunity for our students to interact with our business community that contributes to the college,” Laliberte said.

MLA Herb Cox, North Battleford councillor Kevin Steinborn and Battleford councillor Judy Pruden attended the event along with other dignitaries.

Cox addressed the crowd to congratulate students on the hard work they put into their education.

“It’s certainly a great moment for you and a great moment for your families and indeed for this entire community,” he said. “I’d also like to commend you for choosing to study and to stay here in the province and I certainly suggest to you that whatever path you choose to follow in the future, I encourage you to stay right here in Saskatchewan. This is certainly a great place to work, to live and to raise your families.”
