Sask. Premier not concerned about N.B. federal health deal

While Saskatchewan waits, there is a health deal for New Brunswick.

New Brunswick signed an agreement with Ottawa estimated to be worth $1.2 billion over 10 years.

However, Premier Brad Wall isn’t concerned by the development.

“Sometimes you achieve a broad consensus amongst all the provinces and you negotiate multi-laterally with all the provinces signing onto something in the end,” Wall explained.

“Sometimes it is bilateral, sometimes it is province by province, so we will wait and see.”

Negotiations between the federal health minister and her provincial counterparts ended without an agreement Monday.

But Wall maintained each province must answer to its individual needs.

“We have a large capita first nations population that impacts health differently here than it does where there is not that demographic.”

However, Wall, along with his provincial counterparts, have expressed general concerns with how the federal government has been funding health.

“The federal government used to fund 50 per cent of Medicare and it will be down to 20 per cent here soon, yet they want 75 per cent of the say through the Canada Health Act and that is just not sustainable.”
