Dragon Slayer? Sheidegger tops Jones; continues to roll

Jan 7, 2017 | 6:39 PM

Casey Sheidegger is appearing in her first elite grand slam and the crowds around the Civic Centre are already giving her a nick name; Dragon Slayer.

The little-known team from Lethbridge beat world number one Rachel Homan earlier in the event and has now knocked off Manitoba’s Jennifer Jones. Those are two of the biggest names in the sport.

Sheidegger wasn’t sure if she could accept the nick name though.

“Oh gosh. That’s pretty intense, I don’t know about about that,” Sheidegger said. “It’s always great to play well against the top teams and know that you can compete with them. We are just happy and we love being here.”

It appeared Jones had the game in control, going up 4-1 after the fifth end, but a miss draw by Jones on her last rock left Sheidegger a draw for three with the hammer in the sixth. Jones re-established a one point lead in the seventh, but missed a double in the final end and Sheidegger picked up two and the win.

Val Sweeting out of Edmonton handled Tracy Fleury and her team from Ontario 7-4 which sets up a battle of Alberta in the quarterfinals between Sweeting and Sheidegger.

Switzerland’s Silvana Tirinzoni breezed by Ontario’s Jacquline Harrison 6-2, while Anna Hasselborg out of Sweden was triumphant in eight ends over Ontario’s Allison Flaxey 7-5. Tirinzoni and Hasselborg will play in an all European matchup in the quarter finals.

Joining the women at 8 p.m. will be the men’s quarterfinals where Niklas Edin of Sweden faces off with B.C’s own Jim Morris. The other game will be the battle of the Brads as Brad Jacobs of Ontario and Brad Gushue of Newfoundland try to punch a ticket to the finals on Sunday.
