Beaver Blues blow out Glaslyn to win game 1

Feb 9, 2017 | 9:45 PM

The Battlefords Beaver Blues had little trouble in their first Saskatchewan Prairie Hockey League playoff game, downing the visiting Glaslyn North Stars 8-2 in a penalty-filled affair.

In total, the Beaver Blues got goals from seven different players.

Cody Danberg led the way with two goals, while Mike George had a goal and three helpers, and captain Brent Salzl notched three assists. Assistant captain Jon Kachur also had two assists, as did forward Jon Hosegood.

From start to finish, there were plenty of skirmishes after the whistle and plenty of power plays for both sides, especially Battlefords. Things heated up the most in the third, particularly when North Stars goaltender Joe Brown almost had the net fall on him, and also after Lee Gaetz was hit from behind. Both instances resulted in fights.

In total, Glaslyn had 16 minor penalties and Battlefords had 10. Each team had two fighting majors and a number of misconducts

Glaslyn actually scored first in the game just 1:33 in, but the response was swift, as the Beaver Blues scored four before the period was done.

First, Danberg tied it at one just before the halfway mark of the opening frame, before Mitch Phillips, Danberg, and George netted three goals in quick succession, all being scored within a 2:33 span.

Dillon Friesen and Mike Nelson added second period goals to make it a 6-1 score after two.

In the third, Traye Tkatchuk and Ryan Whyte added third period goals for the Blues while Adam Gray scored for Glaslyn to make the final 8-2.

The first round of the playoffs is a best three-of-five.

Game two is set for Friday night in Glaslyn.
