Over $50,000 provided to Battlefords in charitable gaming grants

Charitable gaming in the Battlefords area has paid off for several organizations.

Organizations in the Battlefords and surrounding area are receiving more than $55,000 in charitable gaming grants from the Saskatchewan Liquor and Gaming Authority (SLGA).

As a province, the grants total over $1.3 million, with $57,755 of that going to North Battleford and area charities, which includes North Battleford, Battleford and 13 smaller surrounding communities. Those communities are: Biggar, Cando, Cochin, Glaslyn, Hafford, Langham, Livelong, Mayfair, Maymont, Medstead, Meota, Rabbit Lake, and Unity.

These grants are for the second quarter of the fiscal year, from July 1, 2016 to Sept. 30, 2016, and are being given to more than 700 organizations province wide.

The value of the grant that organizations receive is 25 per cent of the net revenues raised by them from charitable activities, including bingo nights, raffles, poker nights etc.

“It really depends on what sort of charitable gaming activity they do,” said David Morris, manager, communications and public education for the SLGA. “Groups that conduct licensed charitable gaming activities are eligible for a grant. Any group, a charitable group… they are eligible for the grant.”

The maximum amount organizations can receive is $100,000 annually.

The Battlefords North Stars hockey club led the way in terms of biggest grants for the Battlefords, at $9,523.97. Original Nine Riding Association Inc. received the second highest at $4,487.43, and the Royal Canadian Legion #9 out of Battleford received the third highest, at $4,184.77.

The largest single grant province wide was $99,347.50 given to Hospitals of Regina Foundation Inc.
