Another charity received a generous donation from some local ladies in the Battlefords.

The Battlefords and Area Sexual Assault Centre is the latest recipient of a cheque from the Battlefords 100 Women Who Care group.

Heather O’Neill, chair for the Battlefords and Area Sexual Assault Centre, made the case for the charity and accepted the donation of $15,450 on the organization’s behalf.

“I’m just very happy and appreciative that they picked us,” O’Neill said. “I think it’s amazing that we can continue what we do. I’d like to awesomely thank all of them, the ladies, for making it happen.”

O’Neill said the centre will use the funds to educate Battlefords youth on prevention.

“We do a lot of educational work in town and this means we can use these funds to get back into the elementary schools and doing more education with the younger kids because I think it’s essential to get in there when they’re very young to prevent assaults and things happening when they’re older,” she said.

The Battlefords 100 Women Who Care group has reached 154 members, far surpassing their original expectations.

Sandra Backus, one of the seven steering committee members with the 100 Women, said they aren’t entirely surprised by the size of the group or generosity of the women, but they are grateful.

“It’s awesome. It’s way more than we ever imagined it would be. We’re just so grateful to the community. North Battleford is a wonderful, wonderful, giving community,” Backus said. “It just makes you feel good. I just look out of the faces of the women that are here and everyone feels the same way. It’s an amazing organization.”

The group themselves received a surprise at their meeting. One of their sponsors, Scott Campbell Dodge, announced that if any of the women brought in a family member or friend for a test drive at the dealership, the car dealer would donate an extra $50 to the chosen charity of the night.

100 Women who care will meet again and choose another charity to receive a donation in April.
