Cold temperatures cause power outage, travel advisory

Jan 12, 2017 | 9:00 AM

It was a cold start to the day for many residents of North Battleford on Thursday as cold temperatures and high winds wreaked havoc and caused a power outage in many areas of the town.

SaskPower spokesperson Heather Johnson said that crews were out searching for cause of the disturbance early on Wednesday morning.

“I think we can blame the inconvenience on Old Man Winter,” said Johnson. “With the freezing cold and the winds that were gusting overnight things were really blowing around out there.”

Johnson says that SaskPower crews had restored most of the power by 7:30 a.m.

The high winds and cold temperatures also forced the RCMP to advise motorists to stay off the highways across the province on Wednesday evening.  Snow and blowing snow on the highways made venturing out last night near impossible and many motorists ended up in the ditch.

The weather also impacting flights in Saskatoon.  Two early morning West Jet flights leaving Saskatoon for Vancouver and Winnipeg were cancelled while another West Jet flight arriving just after 11 from Winnipeg had to be cancelled.
