Outlaws jump out to 1-0 series lead

Mar 9, 2017 | 11:00 AM

The Wilkie Outlaws played arguably their closest game of the Sask West Hockey League season last night, and came out on top, winning 4-3 over Macklin in game one of the league finals.

“It wasn’t our best game, but we were able to find a way to get the win,” Outlaws coach and player Derek Keller said. “I thought Macklin came out and played a really strong game. They’re a fast team. They used their speed. They got in on us…I think the first couple periods [and] I think they caught us off guard a little bit with their speed. I thought we made some good adjustments and had a strong third period and were able to grind out a close victory.”

They now lead the best 3-of-5 series 1-0 because of Keller’s third period goal that came on a late power play.

Teammate Rory Gregoire was able to drag two penalty killers with him to the middle of the ice, before he passed it off to Keller, whose shot beat goaltender Stephen Wolff through a screen.

“Gregoire made a great play…and just dropped it back into my shooting lane and I was able to get a clean shot off,” Keller said. “We had a good screen in front so I was fortuante enough that it went in.”

Goaltending on both sides was solid all night long as well, as Wolff made 35 saves, and Outlaws goaltender Jard Herle stopped 34 of 37 pucks thrown his way.

“Both teams have good goaltending and I think that’s why we’re both here, right?” Keller said. “If you want to win this time of year, you need to have a good goalie.”

It’s been a lot of hockey for Wilkie, who are currently also playing in the north final of the senior ‘A’ provincials. They have a 1-0 series lead on Kindersley, with games two and three, if necessary, both scheduled for the weekend.

Keller believes that the first game of provincials happening this past weekend may have played a role in the team’s slow start.

“We’ve just had so many spirited batles in provincials, that sometimes when you play a mid-week game for playoffs, the intensity level just isn’t there,” he said. “I thought at times, especially to start the game, that’s what was going on.”

Game two of the league finals is not scheduled until Friday, March 17 because of Wilkie’s provincials games this weekend.

The hope is to close out that series with a win on Saturday and not have to play the do-or-die game on Sunday.

“We’re getting a little banged up,” Keller said. “When you play provincials and playoffs, it’s a lot of hockey for us old guys.”

Game two of the provincial north final is set for 8 p.m. in Kindersley on Saturday with a possible game three the following night in Wilkie at 6 p.m.
