AAA Stars get revenge on Blackhawks with road win

Dec 1, 2016 | 9:43 PM

The AAA Stars got a much needed win on Thursday night, thanks to another strong shootout performance, this time over the Beardy’s Blackhawks.

The 4-3 score was their third shootout win of the season, thanks to shootout goals from Dylan Esau and Jaden Shewchuk, who also each scored a goal in regulation.

“Every week we try to work on power play and shootout and stuff because you know you’re going to have to use it at some point,” AAA Stars head coach Jean Fauchon said on Friday morning.

Defenceman Austin King-Cunningham had the other regulation goal for the Stars, while Dodge Long scored twice and Quinn MacDonald netted one for the Hawks.

Stars goaltender Lance Alm was strong again, stopping 34 of 37 shots. He also stopped four of five shots in the shootout.

But the difference was the Stars getting more pucks on goal.

“We’ve got guys who weren’t shooting before that are now putting pucks on net and it showed in the score,” Fauchon said. “We had problems with that before. We didn’t want to shoot. We were looking for that perfect opportunity and holding on to the puck a little too long but now we’re starting to realize that we need to put pucks on net. We need to get traffic in there. Not every goal is going to be a beautiful goal.”

The last time these two teams met, the Stars blew a 5-1 second period lead, eventually losing 6-5 in overtime.

On Thursday, another last minute third period goal from Beardy’s would force overtime but this time it headed to the shootout where the Stars managed to snag the two points.

But they also blew regulation leads of 2-0 and 3-2.

“We still have little things we need to work on,” Fauchon said. “We allowed them to come back again like the previous time we played them, just due to not getting the little things done, like getting the puck out close to our blue line or getting it in deep when you’ve got nothing.

“Just being smart – being aware of the situation. How much time is left on the clock? What’s the score? What area of the rink are we in? Just doing little things and being aware of what needs to be done during those times.”

On the season, Battlefords is now 7-11-0-2, which is 10th in the 12-team league. They are four points back of the all-important eighth spot.

The Stars are on the road this weekend in Tisdale for games on Saturday and Sunday afternoon.

“We played them well last time,” Fauchon said. “They’re in that group, again, that is congested there in the middle of the pack so we need to try and beat them without giving them any points. The one point that we continually give away to teams when we beat them – we’ve got to try to eliminate that and just take the four points without them getting any.”

The Trojans are 10-9-0-1 this season.
