2018 Saskatchewan Winter Games planning underway in N.B.

With over a year to go, planning is in motion to ensure that the next Saskatchewan Winter Games, hosted in North Battleford, will be a successful one.

Local sports chairs, provincial bodies and the games council met up at John Paul II School for the first time, Nov. 19, to discuss the needs of each sport involved. Co-director of sports and venues for the winter games, Kelvin Colliar, said all the early planning is worth it to make the games a great experience.

“I don’t think there’s any substitute for great planning to make sure that these games are successful,” Colliar said, “And we, as a committee, have set forth a goal to make these the best games ever.  I think we’re well on our way to doing that.”

He pointed to the host city, and how its community will help shape the event.

“When we look at the city of North Battleford, it’s filled with really great people and great volunteers. This will be a legacy piece, not only for sport, but I think for building that sense of community here in the Battlefords,” he said.

Athletes will be competing in 17 different sports, including a snow cross event, new to the Saskatchewan Winter Games this year.

Ken Trofimuk is the provincial representative for weight lifting. He said the games are an important event for young athletes as a stepping stone for larger competitions.

“This is the spring board for our athletes to strive. We’ve had athletes that have competed in the winter games that have gone on to international success,” Trofimuk said. “This is kind of like our Olympics for our junior athletes. This is really great for our grass roots program. Our athletes have this and then they can start dreaming about making the team to go to junior nationals, senior nationals and other competitions outside the province.”

The 2018 Saskatchewan Winter Games will begin in February of 2018.
