Antique Saskatchewan Hospital items offered in auction

Oct 28, 2016 | 7:05 AM

The Saskatchewan Hospital is hauling out its store of antiques to raise money for its new facility.

Corinne Delainey, fundraising lead for the Saskatchewan Hospital New Beginnings campaign, said all of the items being auctioned off were used in the hospital and eventually stored away.

“We’ve dusted everything off and cleaned it all up and quite a bit of it is really interesting, unique antique or collectible type items,” she said. “They’re unique pieces, all of them have been used in the hospital at one time or another.”

Some of those items include three antique psychiatrist couches, a sewing machine, and lots of furniture like chairs and desks.

The auction runs from Oct. 31 to Nov. 10 and items can be viewed online anytime or in person at the hospital on Nov. 3 between 1 p.m. and 8 p.m.

Delainey said an item she finds interesting is an old psychiatric teaching tool. Heavy paper posters mounted on wood, featuring interesting and beautiful artwork. Some other items available include an antique barber chair, a leather doctor’s bag, light fixtures, glass syringes and local artwork.

Money from the auction will go toward New Beginnings’ $8 million fundraising goal for equipment and furniture for the new Saskatchewan Hospital. Delainey said the money will come entirely from fundraising.

“We’re actually lucky, because the Saskatchewan Hospital is a provincial facility and the only one of its kind in the province, the province is paying 100 per cent of the construction cost,” she said. “We don’t have to fundraise for any construction costs but we do have to fundraise for what goes inside.”

Delainey said the fundraising is going well so far, as the campaign has raised $1.14 million.
